Overview of MScom

The Executive Master of Science in Communications Management (MScom) is a part-time, postgraduate program for experienced communications professionals. One of the first programs of its kind in Europe, MScom was founded in 1999 at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland. Seminars are held in English every other month over a 21-month period. A multinational faculty of more than 30 professors with impressive academic credentials and business experience ensures the program’s excellence and global orientation. The MScom curriculum includes a two-week strategic session at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, Los Angeles.

Target groups
The Executive Master of Science in Communications Management is designed for experienced communications managers as well as for young, high-potential communication professionals who want to further their knowledge to include the latest theories and practices. Representing a variety of backgrounds, degree candidates share a high level of professional experience and personal achievement. The active participation of students and lively exchange with the faculty is a hallmark of the MScom educational experience.

Program goals and benefits
The MScom Program trains communications managers and executives to oversee all facets of communications management, including:

  • developing communications strategies for a global environment
  • managing complex communications tasks: brand management, corporate culture and corporate identity management, internal relations, financial and investor relations, public affairs, issues management, crisis management, sponsoring, advertising and media relations
  • monitoring the communications environment with scientific, reliable methods

Program methods and format
Classes meet for seven days, every other month. Beginning in January of each year, classes start at noon on Saturday and continue until mid-day of the following Saturday, allowing more flexibility for participants to travel to and from Lugano. This new format encompasses seven class sessions in Lugano, including one attended by degree candidates from the Copenhagen Business School's Master in Corporate Communications (MCC).

In addition, MScom students attend one class session in Copenhagen at MCC, and MScom and MCC participants together attend a two-week summer session at the Anderson School of Business at UCLA, Los Angeles, California.

Language of instruction
Lectures, class discussions and tests are conducted in English, the official language of MScom.

Locations
The Executive Master of Science in Communication takes place in three different locations:

  • Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Switzerland. Comfortable and modern Executive Center with private lounge and wireless computer network.
  • Copenhagen Business School
  • UCLA Anderson School of Managemen

Admissions
Applications are welcome from individuals with at least three years of relevant work experience in the field of communications and with one of the following degrees:

  • a university degree
  • a degree from a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule)
  • a professional diploma in the area of public relations, marketing communications, advertising or marketing, awarded by a recognized institution


In special cases, applications based on professional portfolios will also be considered.

Candidates are expected to have already mastered communications practices such as campaign design and management, public relations management, briefing techniques, participation in pitching processes and professional skills such as project management, and presentation techniques. If any of these areas are new to candidates, attending special seminars should be considered before starting the program.

Admission decisions are based on an interview and a completed application.

Tuition and fees
CHF 46,000, (approx. EUR 28,500) payable in four installments. This fee includes lodging, and breakfast and lunch on lecture days during The Anderson School Session. It also includes lecture material and refreshments during the Copenhagen session. Not included in the fees are books, travel, and accommodations in Lugano and Copenhagen.
